Remembering the Gospel

There are many, many churches in the Town of Madang. There is a small Christian book store downtown and it is quite common to find individuals who are self taught street preachers walking around. You can find the name of Jesus Christ mentioned on a regular basis by some people that you interact with. The first thought anyone would have to this should be joy! It is a joyful thing to know that God’s Word is readily available in Madang and people have access to a church. The discouraging news can be the depth of error that is commonly taught and the lack of Gospel proclamation in the...

The Gospel

The Gospel

If you walked up to someone and said the word “gospel” what would they think it means?  It could be Gospel Music, it could be the Prosperity Gospel, and it could mean general good news.  The Bible however is rather specific on what the Gospel is and we make it more specific by saying, The Gospel of Jesus Christ. The word Gospel means “good news” but there can never be good news unless there is “bad news” that the good news is a remedy for.  The bad news is man’s condition before God.  God does not see man as lacking help, needing encouragement, close...

God’s Word

God’s Word

If you have a Bible in your language; it is all of God’s grace.  You have in print what countless people in ages past did not.  We can so easily become numb to the cost of having a Bible in our language.  The men who preserved it risked torture, imprisonment, and death to preserve and translate God’s Word into the common language of the day. My Bible reading today was in Joshua 8.  Israel had just been defeated by the city of Ai because of one man’s disobedience to God, by taking possessions from Jericho (Chapter 7).  After this person was addressed Israel fought against Ai...

Romans 8:1–4

Last week I had the opportunity to preach at a mens retreat, along with 14 others.  Grace Bible Church has a class called “H3” where men are trained in introductory theology, as well as sermon preparation.  Although I was not in H3 this year I did have to present a sermon for my Hermeneutics class.  It was so encouraging to hear God’s word from 14 other men.  I was both encouraged, convicted, and brought to God’s grace in the Gospel. My text was Romans 8:1-4.  It was a robust passage for me, and I can recall at least 3 times that I broke down in tears when I studying...

Knowing God

Knowing God

I am in the middle of J.I. Packers book “Knowing God”.  It has been a refreshing tool that continues to cause a greater desire for God’s word.  It has also caused me to ask myself questions regarding my thankfulness for the Holy Spirit’s ministry in redemptive work and, my daily sanctification.  Below are a few highlights that I have been chewing on so far this week.  I pray that these highlights are an encouragement to you as well.”Disregard the study of God, and you sentence yourself to stumble and blunder through life blindfolded, as it were, with no sense of...

Matthew 5

My time in the word landed in Matthew 5 recently.  This section of scripture has been titled “The Sermon on the Mount” and rightly so as Jesus is sitting down on a mountain teaching.  Jesus is speaking to the crowds of people that had been following him from:  Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan (4:25).You can read Matthew 5 in its entirety just follow this link to Bible Gateway:  Matthew 5Jesus is restating the law and adding greater clarity to it.  He is showing himself to these crowds as having words equal to God’s in the Old Testament.  Look...
