A Circle and Stick

A noise we commonly hear around our house is the bang of sheet metal. I you were new to our home, you would think someone threw a rock at our fence, or maybe a bird ran into the gate. Quite the contrary, you would be surprised to find that it from the wayward “circle” hit by a stick in a neighborhood kid’s game.

Kids playing circle and stick

Should you want to play this amazing game, you will need just three things: The energy of a grade schooler, one old foam flip-flop with a circle cut out of it, and a stick or branch. Our neighborhood kids will typically form two teams with varying players on each side. They will then choose a middle of the “field” and begin play.

Someone will start the game by rolling the foam circle, cut from the flip-flop, in the direction of the opposite team. The opposite team must hit the circle, rolling it back to the other team’s side. Because the circle is flat, it only rolls as long as it has momentum to keep it moving. As soon as it falls flat,“dies” and stops rolling, the opposing team earns a point. So, you have to keep that circle moving and keep it from dying on your side of the line!

Our kids have been having a blast playing this with the neighborhood kids lately. Who would have thought a foam circle and a stick could be such fun!
