Settlements in Madang
Part of living in a foreign culture is being continually shocked by things. Back in April of 2016 there was a fight in Madang between Sepik and Highlanders. I think the official report was 3 cars were burned, multiple injuries as well as lots of unrest. As a result, Police were sent to Madang from Lae to help strengthen the local Police and assist in addressing the unrest. It’s always easier doing something the second time. Learning to drive a car, riding a bike, even using chop-sticks! The second time is still a mess but you always learn some critical things not to repeat the second time. Lorie and I found out recently that a baby was named after me in Mareroro! Cassidy Cann sent us an email with this update and a photo of the little guy (very cute). It seems to be a common thing to have children named after you in PNG. However, it tends to only happen with individuals you have built a relationship with. Zach Cann had this happen when he was in Madang during orientation. Namu is the dad of this little guy. He was instrumental in helping Matt, Zach and I house build. Something we experience regularly is sickness. We have had our share of it in PNG. The list thus far… Giardia Lamblia, flu, infection, virus’s causing asthma in the kids, flippant fevers, abscesses, random weakness, rashes, headaches, intense stomach pain, vomit and diarrhea. With all those sicknesses we have taken a LOT of medicine as well. Things like blood work and regular operations that would be performed in the States are just not available here. Thankfully there are pharmacies in town that sell common drugs that are needed to treat most issues. All in all we are...

This week Tuesday was the day! The first supply run for Team nDo (Canns and Dodds) was exciting, exhausting, adventurous and joyful! Because it was the first supply run there were plenty of times when I spent more time deciding the best way to do something rather than just doing it. It will be nice to improve this task as the years go on. Something that made this supply run even more difficult was communication.
