Freedom from Traditionalism

Freedom from Traditionalism

Meet Jon and James.  Jon is the handsome beardy fellow on my right, James is on my left.  Jon is a deacon at our Madang EBC Church body.  James, is the Associate Pastor.  I love these men, and find myself continually thankful for their ministry in Madang.  God saved Jon out of traditionalism and he recently shared his testimony with me. This last Sunday, Jon was sharing his testimony with the congregation.  He is already a soft spoken guy.  Add in the fact that there were fans running, a poor PA system and puppies running around the pews.  It was a perfect storm to make it even harder to...

Saying good-bye to Matt Dodd, for a time.

Matt Dodd is at his heavenly home, but it has been a weighty week. For those that did not hear, our beloved friend and bother in Christ, Matt Dodd passed away on Tuesday, July 18th.  He left behind his wife Cameron and their four children:  Susanna, Benaiah, Onesimus & Mary. The emotions have been mixed for us:  Joy coupled with sorrow and hope with sadness.  I know how we are feeling is same as some of you who are reading.  With seasons of trial it is always wise to remind ourselves of what is TRUE!  I wanted to share some truths we have been dwelling on in light of this sobering news....

A Portrait of Humility: Matt Dodd

Matt Dodd… Just hearing his name makes me think of a Christ following, joyful, happy, energetic, spontaneous, mildly crazy individual.  Maybe it’s because of that time we finished hiking out from a survey and he randomly ran into the ocean to play in the waves.  Maybe it was the time he went back to Madang on a ship to get more supplies after I had thrown up around 20 times.  Maybe it was his smile when we all endured the crazy flights to PNG.  Regardless, there are plenty of memories that solidify those traits into the name Matt Dodd. I have known Matt for around 7 years.  When...

Things that provoke to temptation

Information is not experience There is always a difference between information, and knowledge gained through experience.  A mother reading about giving birth does not have the same perspective as the mother, who is holding her newborn daughter.  Knowing if you studied enough for an exam is always made clear when it is complete.  In life, we continually experience this truth:  Information is not experience. Before we came to Papua New Guinea we had read about it, talked about it and met with people who had lived there.  We cooked food that was different.  We shopped at grocery stores that...

Learning a lost art: Sentence Diagramming

Learning a lost art: Sentence Diagramming

Why Sentence Diagram? I read a good book recently, “Sister Bernadette’s Barking Dog” by Kitty Burns Florey.  The book is a well written, witty history on the birth and progressive refinement of sentence diagramming.  I think she sums up how most feel about sentence diagramming in the opening pages, 1″Diagramming sentences is one of those lost skills, like darning socks or playing the sackbut, that no ones seems to miss.” My first exposure to sentence diagramming that I remember was at Grace Bible Church in 2011.  I’m sure my third grade elementary school...

Lehman Furlough 2017

Furlough:  October 2017 – July 2018 To say our blog and website have been neglected would be an understatement.  This is my first post in the last five months… Rest assured, we are alive and well in Madang.  Lord willing the topic of furlough will be a good way to break the silence. I remember setting foot in Madang.  It was December 6th 2014.  Our family was tired, excited and ready to get to work.  The idea of furlough was so far in the distance.  Thankfully, we had plenty to do before furlough and praise the Lord we have been busy…  Well, like all things in life the...
